可持续发展研究院是全面落实《深圳市可持续发展规划（2017—2030年）》和《深圳市国家可持续发展议程创新示范区建设方案（2017—2020年）》的关键载体和有力保障，为深圳市建设国家可持续发展议程创新示范区提供强大的国际化智库资源和平台。

研究院结合2030年可持续发展议程，以探索超大型城市经济、社会、环境全面协调可持续发展为主题，以破解制约超大城市可持续发展的生态环境关键瓶颈问题为着力点，联合国际组织、专家网络、国内外知名大学和研究机构，为可持续发展过程中的宏观政策、政府咨询、成果产业化、服务地方等方面提供有力保障，为深圳市作为国家可持续发展议程创新示范区建设样板提供国际化智库支撑，为全球可持续发展贡献中国智慧和经验。

同时，研究院将积极协助深圳建立可持续发展国际人才和技术的教育培训基地，举办可持续发展国际会议和讲座，开展国际可持续发展系列主题宣传活动、首席科学家专题宣讲等工作，将可持续发展的理念深入民心，提高全社会参与落实国家可持续发展议程创新示范区建设的意识和全民参与的热情。
